Harpo finds some adorable ways to sleep. And he loves helping my mom out.
Our last nor'easter of the season. By this time tomorrow there's supposed to be between 15 and 20 inches of heavy, wet snow on the ground. Obviously, I won't be venturing into Cortland for school. This is the bad kind of snow; it brings down trees and powerlines. Best to just stay inside and work on papers. I might go to Cornell if the buses are running.
Last night I finished a skully washcloth. Super easy pattern and it took me no time to knit. I knit a little bit before class and got some interesting comments:
- A male professor rushing down the hall, "How domestic of you."
- A male professor meandering down the hall, "What are you knitting? A washcloth? What a waste of time. Make a scarf."
- A British male visitor tagging along behind a professor, "Oh, how lovely. Someone knitting. You don't see that every day."
Alright, I've got to turn off my TV and get some work done. Teen Witch was on and now it's Hocus Pocus... two of my favoritest movies!
I gave my individual presentation today in Spanish. It went fairly well. I was super nervous so I didn't deviate from my notecards and I spoke really quickly. I was anxious for the questions the teacher was going to ask at the end but it ended up only being one (easy) question that sparked a conversation about tattoos (or tatuajes), so I was able to get out of the spotlight. Phew. Now I just have to dread the group presentation--that one has to be memorized. The above picture, by the way, was taken by the lovely Taylor and I used it as my closing slide in my powerpoint. Quite pretty, eh? That's Naples.
It rained this morning. Rain melts snow. YAY! I actually saw grass for the first time in weeks; I had forgotten how green it is. Now the sun is out melting more snow. I almost wish it wasn't, though, 'cause I wanted to make a snowman this weekend. The snow was perfect snowman snow... now it's just icy and gross. There's always next year, I suppose.
There will be much studying done this weekend. I've got a thesis and source list due on Monday for my Archaeology of Religion paper (Stonehenge? Nazca Lines? Tenochitlian? Suggestions?). Tuesday is my first Astronomy test and Thursday the third homework is due. Last week my professor quit, so the Chair of the department is teaching the class. He's a fan of math and will be structuring the course that way. I suck at math. Thus, I will probably suck on the test. I've also got a Spanish test and the Archaeology of Religion midterm. Next week is going to suck.
So, I drove to school today. It was scary. By the time I got to campus (and slid up hill) my jaw was killing me because I had been clenching it the whole way.
Some new items I received today... L to R: Batik bowl from Indonesia (via Target), wooden elephant from India whom I've named Jishnu (also via Target), Crash Course for the GRE (via PBS), Bel Canto (PBS, too), and Peru Before the Incas (PBS as well). I love PBS... I hate going to school in the snow, though. And I really hate my Astronomy class (well, I hate waiting two hours for it to start... so I think I'm going to drop it and take it in the summer).
Cortland cancelled classes! (for the first time since the mid-90's, I think) Ithaca's declared a state of emergency! It's snoooowwwwyyyyy!
This is my first snow day. I wish I had a sled.
So, the Nor'easter is coming through tonight and tomorrow. By midnight tomorrow we're supposed to have between 18 and 36 inches on the ground. Wow. Needless to say, I'll be staying home from school (I doubt I'll even be able to get out of my driveway much less all the way to Cortland). My mom said Tops was absolutely packed, like when there's a hurricane coming through--no water left on the shelves, parking lot filled to the brink, lines down the aisles. Fun! I got a couple books through PBS today and I checked out some classic anthro books from Cornell (Malinowski's Argonauts of the Western Pacific--a copy from 1922!!--and A Diary in the Strict Sense of the Word, Leach's Rethinking Anthropology, and Lévi-Strauss' The Savage Mind), so I should have enough to keep myself productive.
Today when I got home from school there were about 8 turkeys in our front yard. They're so cute! They were talking to turkeys that were across the street and behind the house. I took a picture of the turkey snow prints.
And these were taken the other day (the sunniest day we've had in a long time).
So, it's pretty freaking cold today. It was -1 when I woke up with a windchill of -16. Brrr. The roads were terrible. Ithaca isn't very good at the plowing thing. Cortland was a little better (see above video with Meatloaf soundtrack) but the sidewalks at school were ridiculous... I almost died like ten times walking around campus. It's supposed to get up to 30 tomorrow, so that'll be nice. Especially now that our pipes are freezing.
How about some pictures? There's one from this morning ('cause on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I'm up and gone before the sun). The other is from late morning on my way home on the backroads... they were not fun. And the last couple are the mailboxes 'cause... they looked pretty. And at the bottom are some kitty pictures (Harpo put himself in my backpack, I swear.) Ennnnjoy.
