So, I ordered the shirt I'm going to wear to Taylor's wedding the other day. I found it for sale on gap.com. I, of course, didn't proofread the order carefully before I clicked submit and it was sent to my old apartment. No worries, though. I stalked its progress on UPS.com and picked up at the old place before the current residents even knew it was delivered.
It's going to be a really casual wedding on the beach, so I'll wear it with a fun colored tank top underneath and some jean capris. I know it's a faux paux to wear white to a wedding if you're not the bride but fuck it. Those "rules" are pretentious. It's a pretty shirt and I'll get a lot of wear out of it.
This evening, after a lovely dinner at Banfi's (nice decor, good food, special treatment 'cause my sister works there), I watched a few episodes of a British show called Sugar Rush. I love British and Canadian teen dramas... they're way better than American ones. It's crazy the amount of nudity and swearing the British ones have in them. I was shocked when Emma Nelson said "bitch" on Degrassi, but on Skins you hear fuck every two seconds (I'm sure there's lots of "bad" British slang that's used but it doesn't register with me). Regardless, it's fucking cool. And I'm ordering Sugar Rush on DVD.
Also, I learned about "toad in a hole" in one of the Sugar Rush episodes. I looked it up on wikipedia and it's yorkshire pudding with stuff in it, topped with gravy. Sounds delicious. I'm always up for yorkshire pudding. And I heard the terms "pull" (the successful act of attracting someone) and "ginger pubes" (a "standard greeting" to all ginger people) which I looked up in the Urban Dictionary. I can't imagine ever using ginger pubes in a conversation but I think I'll try out "pull."
Well, classes are officially over. I was exempt from my Spanish final because I maintained an A throughout the course (yay!) and I took my Archaeology final yesterday. All I have left are two papers, one on female Thai migrant workers and another on anthropological theory since the '60s. Those should be bundles of fun.
Taylor's wedding is in less than a month. I'm definitely not as skinny as I'd hoped I'd be at this point. But I've started my infamous tuna sandwich crash diet. Fingers crossed that I can lose at least 20 pounds.
Chrissy and Adam are thinking about going to Mexico this summer. If they go, they might take me 'cause of my fly Spanish-speaking skills. I'm dying to go to Mexico. Earlier this week I learned about the Maya in my Archaeology class and I really wanna check out Pacal's temple in Palenque. It'd be pretty cool to read the Popol Vuh in a Mayan ruin.
So, one of my goals this summer is to read at least one book a week (I'll have to pry myself away from this website). How about a list?
Books I've read (so far) this summer
I loved Curtis Sittenfeld's Prep but MOMD was just eh. I like her writing style but the subject matter was kind of boring. I've never read any of Nick Hornby's stuff before (I'm not a big fan of reading British books in general) but the premise seemed pretty cool. I haven't actually finished reading it yet but, if I ignore my papers for another night, I'll be done soon.
Books I want to read this summer
The first couple are for a class I'm taking in the fall, Contact and Culture Change. I figure since that class is going to have a 20 page paper and I'll be starting my thesis, I should probably get a head start. (Speaking of my thesis, I was thinking maybe I could write about the impact of war on museums. I could look at the history of museums (their purpose and all), focus on museums during WWI/WWII, mention the looting that happens during war and what has found its way onto the black market, and finish up with the Iraq war and what priceless artifacts have been lost (mostly Sumerian stuff, I believe). I don't know... I'm still in the really early stages of it. I'll probably spend some time in the Cornell libraries this summer.) Anyways, I watched that really terrible movie adaptation of Growing Up Brady the other night (with an adorable Adam Brody) and thought it'd be fun to read the book. Good thing I found it on paperbackswap 'cause I certainly wouldn't want to be seen buying it. And the last couple are supposed to be pretty good. What's everyone else reading this summer?
So, my Callanetics DVDs came in the mail yesterday. They were made in the late 80's and are very similar to that SNL Digital Short, Body Fusion, when Drew Barrymore hosted. When I was in high school my Aunt Linda brought the 10 Years Younger in 10 Hours VHS tape with her when she came to visit us. I dubbed it and did it a couple of times--it's a surprisingly intense workout for barely moving. In the move to New York I had lost the tape (and no longer owned a VCR). I was insanely happy when I found it on amazon in DVD format. I've calculated that I potentially can do the DVDs 105 times before I have to go to Florida... I just don't want to look huge in Taylor's wedding pictures. Fingers crossed that it actually works like it's supposed to.
Things I encountered on campus today:
- A man wearing shorts and a hoodie. It was snowy, windy, and 22 degrees (15 degrees with the windchill). Even I wore a freakin' jacket today.
- The nastiest brown sludge ever... before classes started it was probably snow.
- A talkative woman at the bus stop wearing a teeth whitening tray. It could've been Invisiline but I'm pretty sure that stuff isn't as obvious.
So, the classes I had today were Spanish and Anthropological Theory. Spanish at 8 AM is not a good thing. I have a different teacher than I've had the past couple semesters and, shockingly, she speaks in Spanish the entire time. I didn't realize how spoiled I had become by having a Spanish class taught primarily in English. I need to review. A lot. My theory class should be pretty cool... he's teaching it like a grad class, so there will be tons of reading and discussion. And there are only two papers and two tests. I can tell he'll be expecting a lot from us.
Anyways, time for some food and quick workout 'cause, yes, this will be the semester I get in shape! I have to... Taylor's wedding is in June and I don't plan on being the fattie in the wedding pictures.
