Summer has arrived and with it the kitty lounging season. Our house doesn't have central AC or even window AC units. When it's 87 degrees outside, it's about 95 upstairs. Thus, the kitties flop around in super adorable positions. And I take pictures.
I'll also include a video of Lucia doing what I call "subdue"--that kangaroo-like back feet double push. Freakin' cute.
So, it's pretty freaking cold today. It was -1 when I woke up with a windchill of -16. Brrr. The roads were terrible. Ithaca isn't very good at the plowing thing. Cortland was a little better (see above video with Meatloaf soundtrack) but the sidewalks at school were ridiculous... I almost died like ten times walking around campus. It's supposed to get up to 30 tomorrow, so that'll be nice. Especially now that our pipes are freezing.
How about some pictures? There's one from this morning ('cause on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I'm up and gone before the sun). The other is from late morning on my way home on the backroads... they were not fun. And the last couple are the mailboxes 'cause... they looked pretty. And at the bottom are some kitty pictures (Harpo put himself in my backpack, I swear.) Ennnnjoy.
Today is my brother's 37th birthday. To celebrate we went out to dinner both last night and tonight. Tonight's dinner was pretty fun... Lucatelli's (the best Italian place in Ithaca) is super relaxed and the entire staff knows us. So, after the wine was done and the after dinner drinks started coming, I broke out the camera for some camera fun. Here's the result:
To the right, that's my sister flicking off my brother and then attempting to cup Frank's balls.
The group shot taken by the fabulous Carmin. Me, brother, my brother's girlfriend Melissa, and Chrissy.
My brother managed to throw his chicken parm covered knife on himself and Melissa had to clean him with flat club soda. And during the little photoshoot I tried to get a serious picture out of them but it was impossible.
So, this morning I woke up at the ungodly hour of 9 a.m. because the sun was shining right into my eyes (the downside of not investing in curtains). I also realized I had two very large kitties at the foot of my bed and about six inches of leg room. When I looked out the window, I saw it was snowing... it was a pleasant surprise being as this is Ithaca which has a reputation for being a frozen tundra six months out of the year and we haven't seen snow in quite a while. When I went to put my coat and boots on I found Loki making a mess out of the downstairs closet. It's his favorite thing to do lately... he'll knock down all the scarves and climb his way up to the top of the closet for the best napping place. Anyways, when I got outside it was pretty freakin' cold (19 degrees to be exact... 7 degrees with the windchill). The snow was pretty fluffy, not ideal for making snowballs, and it hid the mushy ground from the past week of rain. Gross. In the last few pictures you can see Dinah gazing longinly out the window at me. She used to make that same face when we lived at 62 Hudson Heights. And the last two pictures are a few days old... you can usually find Dinah or Lucia curled up on top of the fish tank at some point during the day and I managed to capture another picture of Auggie mid-yawn.
I'll leave you with a couple of videos. The first is just the snow falling and the second is the kitty party that happens every morning once they see I'm awake.
We had some weird-ass weather today. First it was cloudy, then the sun came out, then it was sleeting (is that a word?), and then more sun, then light snow, more sun, and then a hail storm. I can't remember the last time I've seen real hail. They weren't huge but they certainly made a lot of noise. Have a listen. Fun fact: when I went over to pick up the hail, the wind changed directions and I had tons of hail blown into my hair. It was neat.
And now for some Dinah/Harpo cuddling.
L to R: Where I do my super important (filing) work in MVR; the sign for Martha's outside the elevator; inside the elevator... I used to sort mail in the sub-basement but now I work on the basement level; the overpriced light-up palm tree at Bed, Bath and Beyond; South Hill--it's the one that screams whatever season it is, right now it's screaming "spring?! WINTER?! I DON'T KNOW!!"; a weird ass vegetable I saw at GreenStar; and GreenStar, the crunchy co-op that smells like Ithaca hippies... they have an interesting selection but sometimes the volunteers can be a little snobby and the prices a bit steep.
While we were at GreenStar, my mom picked out some kava tea. I don't know why she so desperately wanted it for me but she did. Anyways, the box had a yoga position for relaxation. I thought it was hilarious... hilarious enough to post on Vox.
The tea is pretty weird tasting. I tried being a badass and brewing 3 bags at once... mistake. It had the weirdest aftertaste I've ever experienced. I've deluted it and am waiting for it to cool 'cause hot tea isn't my thing (unless it's chai, of course).
Let me end this with a video I took while driving down Rt. 13. The Zutons are playing but I can't remember what song... And pay special attention to the weather: 60 degrees and mostly sunny with no snow on the ground--not right for January in Ithaca. Here's what the Farmer's Almanac says:
It's teasing: mild and moist, then fine but freezing! Sunny spells turn cold and sleety; Janus is a two-faced deity. Brrr! It's bitter, with snow spitters. Mush and slush, by gush!
How do they know that stuff? 'Cause, seriously, it's mild and moist right now and we're supposed to be getting a cold snap early next week. Freaky.
Some video I took from my window this morning (late morning):
Finally it feels like winter. The fifty degree days were very unsettling.
And these are for Chrissy 'cause she hasn't had her kitty dose in a while. L to R: A rare event--all five kitties in one place; Dinah and Lucia being too cute for words; Harpo sleeping in a laundry basket during Christmas Eve dinner; Harpo owning my laundry basket; and Harpo passed out.
At Target yesterday I picked up The Kite Runner and 1491. They looked really interesting and were affordable. I'm not sure when I'll actually get a chance to read them... Especially since today I got the syllabus for my Literature, Pop Culture, and Sex course I'll be taking online over break. The required reading is only three books: The Artificial Silk Girl, Valley of the Dolls, and Less Than Zero. We have to participate in board discussions (my weak point when it comes to online classes), write 10 one-page explication papers and 2 five-page papers. Artificial Silk Girl and Less Than Zero weren't available at Cornell, so I had to buy them through amazon. The copy of Valley of the Dolls I picked up at Cornell is from 1966. Crazy.
My version of Knitty's Calorimetry. I used Pattens SWS (soy wool stripes) in a pretty color *coughlostthelabelcough* It's actually felted 'cause it ended up being way too big. It's warm but itchy as hell. Next time I'm gonna make it out of alpaca.
And now a cute picture of Dinah and Harpo. It was Harpo's first cuddlefest since joining our family. By the by, they're napping in a rolled up yoga mat that I keep off to the side of my room.
Finally, I'll leave you with video of my white amaryllis... because, yes, I took video of my flowers. I'm a dork. Just you wait, though, the pink one (Rosado Parks) and the red one (Ms. Scarlette-in-the-Library-with-the-Candlestick) will be blooming within the week--tons of pictures will follow.
